1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below: (Lesson 9, J.C. Bose: A Beautiful Mind) 

This great Indian scientist was eventually crowned with glory when he was awarded Knighthood by the British Government in 1917. 

He was also conferred many other awards like ‘Fellow of the Royal Society’, ‘Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire’ etc. Needless to say, he is one of the greatest scientists ever born in our country.

Sir JC Bose wrote several books and published many research papers in leading science journals. 

Some of his famous books are ‘Response in the living and the Non-living’ (1902), ‘The Nervous Mechanism of Plants’ (1926), ‘Major Mechanism of Plants’ (1928) etc. In 1896, Bose wrote ‘Niruddesher Khoje’, a science fiction. In fact, he was the first writer of science fictions in Bangla.

In November 1917, Bose founded the ‘Bose Institute’ at his own house in Calcutta. He donated ‘Bose Institute’ to the nation for research on science. This great Indian scientist breathed his last on 23rd November, 1937.

Lamartine, the French poet and statesman, was never rich. He had a great desire to possess a car of his own. For this purpose he saved money. He put this in a box. 

He had saved about one thousand francs (Rupees). At this time, a poor widow with several children came to his room. She told him with tears that she had no bread to eat, that her furniture had been seized. She also said that she and her children had been turned out into the street. “How much do you require?” said Lamartine. The woman replied, “A thousand francs.” “Come here”, said the kind poet and put his savings into her hand. The next day a friend asked him what he would do about the car. “Oh my friend, I shall continue to go on foot. It is better for my health,” said he.

A Greedy Dog

Once upon a time a dog stole a piece of meat from a butcher’s shop. When he was going on the bridge he saw his own reflection in the clean water. He thought that it was another dog with a piece of meat in its mouth.

The dog said itself, “I must have the meat.” He became greedy. As soon as he opened his mouth to bark at its own reflection, the piece of meat fell down from his mouth into the water. He became sad for his foolishness.

Moral: Grasp all, lose all.
